On 26th January Minister Ann Rabbitte convened a working group session to examine accessible transport for people with disabilities, including a priority review of the Disabled Drivers & Disabled Passenger’s Scheme.
At present, Gardai and Traffic wardens do not have the power to issue fines to drivers who illegally park in accessible parking bays in private carparks like shopping centres, educational institutions, hospitals and other spaces.
To tackle the issue, the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland (DDAI) has launched its Bay Watch campaign with two objectives in mind. The first is calling on the Government to change the existing legislation so that gardai and traffic wardens can now impose fines on those parking illegally in private accessible bays. The second is to highlight the ongoing abuse of disabled parking bays in general and push for greater enforcement of existing regulations.
The 52nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland will take place on Saturday 8th October 2022 in The Killeshin Hotel, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
Independent Councillor Geraldine Donohue welcomes the audit of Disabled Parking Bays in Gort Town by Galway County Council following a deputation to the Loughrea Municipal District by Peter Gohery and Martin Moran last June where both men spoke of the various issues in the Loughrea Municipal District which creates difficulties for persons with disabilities, one of the issues raised related to parking facilities.

The 52nd DDAI AGM took place in Portlaoise on Saturday 8th October. This was the first time in 3 years that the AGM was 'in person' due to Covid restrictions.
